TWC-Dimension has announced that Paddington will reach theaters just in time for Christmas of 2014. The film is directed by Paul King and will star Colin Firth as the voice of the titular bear. Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Julie Waters will also star.
Adapted from the book series of the same name by Michael Bond, Paddington follows an anthropomorphized bear from Peru. He arrives in London with nothing but a suitcase and his coat and hat. A local family, the Browns, take him in and name him after the station in which they met him. During his stay with the Browns, Paddington proceeds to get into a series of misadventures despite his very polite best intentions. Prior to the upcoming movie, the book series was previously adapted into three animated television shows.
Paddington, the 2014 movie, will bring the franchise to live action for the first time with a CG animated bear. As a feature length film based on a series of short, episodic stories, Paddington will introduce an overarching plot with Nicole Kidman as a taxidermist. This will be far from the first time that a studio has attempted a CG/live-action film adaptation of episodic children’s material. It will not even be the first time one such adaptation has featured a bear and opened right before Christmas. Hopefully Paddington will fare much better on his journey to the big screen.
