Paddington in Peru just scored the biggest opening of the year at the U.K. box office, Variety reports.
The film is the third installment in the Paddington Bear franchise and comes 7 years after Paddington 2.
Paddington in Peru has also become the biggest opening for a British-produced film, making £9.25M or approximately $12.4M, the biggest opening since Fukunaga’s 2021 James Bond film No Time to Die. StudioCanal financed the film, making it their most expensive investment and biggest opening in the U.K.
The first Paddington opened with £5.1M and the 2017 sequel made £8.2M. Both films collectively grossed over $600M establishing that they were here to stay. Paddington in Peru has already surpassed the first two features’ opening weekends and is expected to gross higher numbers. The film is set to release on Jan.17 in the U.S.
Paddington in Peru opened in 732 theaters, the most for any film release this year, and earned the third biggest opening of the year.
Paddington in Peru follows Paddington on a journey through the Amazon and Peru after learning that his Aunt Lucy has gone missing from her jungle cabin at the Home of Retired Bears. He ventures out on a quest with the Brown family to find her.
The movie stars Ben Winshaw as the voice of Paddington alongside the returning cast of Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Jolin. Olivia Colman, Emily Mortimer, Carla Tous, and Antonio Banderas join the cast of the third installment.
