One film is finally challenging Black Panther at the top of the ring. Black Panther has led the box office in five consecutive weeks, flexing its collective muscles and showing its impact on the domestic and international stage. The film is finally returning down to earth because of the new action sequel Pacific Rim Uprising. Uprising looks to finally take up the throne with an estimated $25 million for its opening weekend, beating out Black Panther‘s modest $17 million 6th weekend, according to Variety.
Pacific Rim Uprising follows its predecessor and brings us the giant robots, huge kaijus, and over-the-top fights that the previous Guillermo Del Toro-led film officially set up. John Boyega of Star Wars fame takes the starring role as Jake Pentecost, the son of the previous main character Stacker Pentecost, who becomes the leader of the human army as it begins to combat against another kaiju threat. The threat, however, is the largest they have ever seen. Will the humans be able to take out the kaiju threat or will it be the end of the human race as they know it?
Although Black Panther is not on the top anymore, it has definitely made its mark on the film industry and on box office history. After this weekend, it will sit at the fifth spot on the highest grossing films in the domestic box office, passing the first Avengers film. Pacific Rim Uprising will most likely stay towards the top of the box office for the upcoming days, but may be dethroned fairly quickly with the release of Ready Player One next week.
