Featurette for Del Torro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ Released

Pacific Rim: Oversized Robot Set Featurette — Official Warners Bros UK

A featurette for director/writer Guillermo Del Torro’s Pacific Rim has just been released. The movie will center on a group of human-piloted robots, “Jaegers,” that are deployed in response to hordes of monstrous, apocalyptic creatures, “Kaijus,” that begin rising from the sea, threatening humanity. Two unlikely heroes stand as humanity’s last defense against the threat of the Kaijus: a washed up pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and a trainee (Rinko Kikuchi).

Del Torro’s past directorial projects have included Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (a third addition is rumored to be in the works) and, perhaps most famously, 2006’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which was nominated for 6 Academy Awards and ultimately took home Oscars for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Makeup. Del Torro is also one of the writers behind Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy.

Pacific Rim will star Charlie Hunnam, known for his work on the television series Sons of Anarchy as well as films such as Children of Men, Cold Mountain, and Nicolas Nickleby, in which he co-starred alongside Anne Hathaway. Hunnam is set to star in Del Torro’s next project, Crimson Peak, which will also feature Benedict Cumberbatch, Jessica Chastain, and Emma Stone. Idris Elba also stars in Pacific Rim; Elba’s other 2013 film projects include the lead in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which has been generating Oscar buzz, and the reprisal of the role of Heimdall in Thor: The Dark WorldPacific Rim’s cast also includes Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie Day.

The featurette clip gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the mechanics behind the robot-centric film. Del Torro narrates the majority of the clip, letting viewers in on fascinating elements that went into the making of the film. The film’s writer and director reveals that some of the movie’s sets towered at four-stories high and were able to rapidly drop up to 15 feet during some filming sequences. Del Torro begins the clip by saying that Pacific Rim is what everyone would have dreamt of seeing when they were eleven years-old. Going off of the clip, however, it appears that this film will appeal to action fans of every age.
