Underworld: Next Generation, the fifth installment in the Underworld series, is beginning to fill out its cast starting with Tobias Menzies (Casino Royale). He is set to play Marius, a mysterious new lycan being added to the mix of vampires, some of whom will be portrayed by series original Kate Beckinsale (Click) and Theo James (Divergent), who appeared in the last installment, Underworld: Awakening. The remaining cast will likely include actors on the younger side to accommodate the film’s ‘Next Generation’ focus.
Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter) wrote the script, and the movie will begin shooting sometime this fall.
Anna Foerster will be directing Underworld V as the first female director of the series, as well as the first woman to helm a female-led horror franchise, according to Entertainment Weekly. Her credits include work on several television series, most notably on Menzies’ own Starz series, Outlander. She was the one to direct him in the show’s first season finale, in which he took part in a controversial and disturbing male sexual assault scene.
When Menzies is not playing the ruthless Captain ‘Black’ Jack Randall on Outlander, he is also working on the series The Night Manager which will premiere next year and also include actors Tom Hiddleston (Thor), Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), and Hugh Laurie (Tomorrowland), among others.
