‘Out of the Furnace’ Trailer Marks Return of ‘Crazy Heart’ Director Scott Cooper

Just in time for awards season, Out of the Furnace marks the return of both filmmaker Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) and Christian Bale (The Dark Knight Rises). A new, second theatrical trailer (below) doesn’t show a ton of new footage, but it does expand on what audiences should expect both tonally and narratively.

Out of the Furnace is the first feature film release for director Scott Cooper since his debut film, 2009’s Crazy Heart – the critically acclaimed drama which won Jeff Bridges the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Original Song for Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett.  Joining Cooper for his sophomoric effort is a dream-team list of Oscar winners and nominees, including Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Forrest Whittaker, Willem Dafoe, Sam Shepard, and potential future-nominee, Zoe Saldana.

The film is based off a screenplay that Scott Cooper co-wrote alongside Brad Ingelsby. It follows Russell Baze (Bale), an ex-convict who seeks out justice when law enforcement refuses to look for his missing younger brother, Rodney (Affleck). The trailer (seen below) teases a film that analyzes the American dream in the Rust Belt through the lens of a gritty, character-driven crime drama/revenge story.

The film will be premiering as a Centerpiece Gala at AFI FEST and is scheduled for a wide release on December 6th.
