

After many delays due to the California wildfires, the 97th Academy Awards are here! There’s some tight competition this year between Best Picture, Best Actor & Actress and Best Supporting Actor & Actress. All types of films filled up the nominees this year, from religious thriller Conclave, to The Substance‘s body horror, to multiple musicals: Wicked and Emilia Pérez. Emilia Pérez leads the charge with 13 nominations despite controversy surrounding the lead’s Karla Sofía Gascón and her resurfaced racist and xenophobic social media posts.
This live blog will begin at 3:30 p.m. PST/6:30 p.m. EST.
6:36: Talking with On The Red Carpet ABC: Wicked director Jon M. Chu calls his 10 nominations “a dream come true.” Calls Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande “a gift from God. They have a love of self and a love of community.”
6:42: Talking with On The Red Carpet ABC: Jeremy Strong says “it’s a dream” to be at the Oscars tonight. “This movie, The Apprentice is a really important film that has a lot to say about our world now,” he added. Robert Downy Jr. crashes Strong’s interview with a kiss and congratulations to him.
6:47: Talking with On The Red Carpet ABC: Michelle Yeoh shares her upcoming projects such as Wicked: For Good and finishing up on the Blade Runner series.
6:54: Live on the ABC & Hulu simulcast Ariana Grande says walking onto the Wicked set was “the most surreal moment of her entire life.” and that “all of the work we [Erivo and Grande] have done had led up to that very moment.”
7:00: The Awards Show opens with a tribute video showing love to the city of Los Angeles.
7:02: Ariana Grande opens with a rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow in a dress shaped as the Ruby slippers Dorothy of The Wizard of Oz wears. Cynthis Erivo follows with her rendition of Home from The Wiz, a Black reimagining of The Wizard of Oz. Grande appears again and the duo sing Defying Gravity.
7:13: Conan O’Brien references The Substance in his Oscar entrance. He ends his opening monologue with a musical number.
7:28: Robert Downy Jr. presents the Best Supporting Actor Award. Kieran Culkin wins for A Real Pain. It is his first Oscar win.

7:38: Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn present the award for Best Animated Film. The Oscar goes to Flow. This is the production team’s first nomination and win and is the first independent film to win Best Animated Film.
Garfield and Hawn also present Best Animated Short Film. In the Shadow of the Cypress takes the win.
7:54: Lily-Rose Depp, Elle Fanning, John Lithgow, Connie Nielson and Bowen Yang take the stage to present Best Costume Design. Each presenter shouts out their respective films’ costume designer to show appreciation to their craft. Paul Tazewell takes the win for Wicked, making him the first Black man to receive the costume design award.

8:07 Amy Poehler takes the stage to present the award for Best Original Screenplay. The Oscar goes to Anora. This is the first win out of Anora‘s six nominations tonight, and his first Oscar win. 8:11: Amy Poehler also presents Best Adapted Screenplay. The winner is Conclave. This is Peter Straughan’s second nomination and first win.
8:21: June Squibb and Scarlet Johansson present Best Make-up and Hair Styling. The winner is The Substance.
8:24: Halle Berry leads the tribute introduction for James Bond tribute video. Margaret Qualley introduces the James Bond tribute. LISA takes the stage, followed by Doja Cat, followed by Raye, each performing iconic songs of James Bond.
8:39: Daryl Hannah presents the award for Best Film Editing. Anora wins its second award of the night.
8:43: Best Supporting Actress winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph takes the stage to present this year’s Best Supporting Actress. Zoe Saldaña wins for Emilia Pérez. This is Saldaña’s first Oscar win. She delivers a heartfelt speech, thanking her mother and family.

8:53: Ben Stiller presents the award for Production Design. The Oscar goes to Wicked. This is the first Oscar win for seven-time nominee Nathan Crowley and three-time nominee Lee Sandles.
8:58: The legendary Mick Jagger takes the stage to present Best Original Song. “El Mal” from Emilia Pérez takes the win.
9:08: Conan O’Brien references Kendrick Lamar’s Superbowl Halftime performance and the beef between him and Drake. “We’re halfway through the show, so now’s the time for Kendrick Lamar to come out and call Drake a pedophile!”

9:10 Samuel L. Jackson and Selena Gomez present the award for Documentary Short Film. The Only Girl in the Orchestra takes the win. It is the first nomination and win for Molly O’Brien and Lisa Remington.
9:14: Best Documentary Feature Film is also presented by Samuel L. Jackson and Selena Gomez. No Other Land wins. This is the first Oscar win for Basal Adra, Rachel Szor, Hamdan Ballal and Yuval Abraham. In their acceptance speech they say “It reflects the harsh reality we’ve been enduring for decades, we call to stop the injustice and stop the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.”

9:25: Miles Teller and Miley Cyrus present the award for Best Sound. The winner is Dune: Part Two. This is the first Oscar win of the night for Dune 2.
9:29: Snow White stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot present the award for Best Visual Effects. The Oscar goes to Dune: Part Two. This is the second win of five nominations of the night for Dune 2.
9:37: Ana De Armas and Sterling K. Brown take the stage to present Best Live Action Short. I’m Not A Robot wins.
9:39: Morgan Freeman talks about his friendship with his good friend, Gene Hackman. “I think I speak for us all when I say Gene, you’ll be remembered [for that], and so much more.”
9:41: The memorial video begins for members of the Academy lost this past year.
9:50: Joe Alwyn, Alba Rohrwacher, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista and Willem Dafoe each shout out their respective cinematographer of their respective film to present the award for Best Cinematography. The Oscar goes to Lol Crawley for The Brutalist. It is his first Oscar nomination and win.
9:56: Penelope Cruz presents the award for Best International Feature Film. I’m Still Here wins the award. It is Brazil’s fifth Oscar nomination and first win.

10:05 Mark Hamill presents the award for Best Original Score. The Brutalist takes another win home. This is the second win of the night for The Brutalist and the first Oscar nomination and win for composer Daniel Blumberg.

10:19: Previous Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy presents Best Actor. The Oscar goes to Adrien Brody for The Brutalist. This is Brody’s second nomination and win, the previous win for his role in The Pianist. He is the first person to win two Oscars with two nominations. “Winning an award like this signifies a destination.”

10:29: Quinten Tarantino takes the stage to present Best Director. Sean Baker wins for Anora. It is Baker’s third Oscar win and the third win for Anora tonight. In his acceptance speech, Baker pushes directors to “keep making films for the big screen.” He adds, “For all of us, when we can, please go watch a movie in the movie theater.”

10:41: Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal present the Best Picture Award. The Oscar goes to Anora. The film won five out of the six awards it was nominated for. This makes Sean Baker the first person to win four Oscars in one night for one movie.

All in all, it was a successful night for Sean Baker and Anora. The Brutalist took home three wins while Wicked was successful as well, walking away with two wins. Highly praised films during this awards season such as The Wild Robot, Nickel Boys, and Sing Sing unfortunately did not nab any wins tonight. This marks the end of the 2024-25 award season.
