The 88th Academy Awards ceremony is finally over and a new year of groundbreaking films will be featured in theaters and festivals around the globe. This year’s Oscar winners are already hard at work on their next projects.
Best Actor winner Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) has not yet announced plans for his next film, however rumors have been circulating that he will team up with Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese (The Departed) for their sixth collaboration together. The film is based on Erick Larson’s acclaimed 2003 non-fiction book The Devil in the White City and will depict the heinous murders of notorious serial killer H.H. Holmes (DiCaprio) during the 1893 World’s Fair.
Newcomer Brie Larson (Room) won the Oscar for Best Actress and has four films currently in production. Basmati Blue and Free Fire are due out later this year and will feature Larson in two diverse roles. She recently completed Kong: Skull Island, which is the big budget origin story of King Kong. In addition, it was just announced that Larson will be co-starring with Woody Harrelson in the memoir adaptation The Glass Castle and is scheduled to start filming later this year.
Best Supporting Actor winners Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) both have busy production schedules this year. Vikander will be starring in two drama films, Tulip Fever and The Light Between Oceans as well as the highly anticipated blockbuster reboot Jason Bourne with Matt Damon. Mark Rylance is currently working on his second collaboration with Oscar winning director Steven Spielberg on The BFG, which is the big budget adaptation of popular Roald Dahl children’s book. Rylance also recently joined that cast of director Christopher Nolan’s next film Dunkirk, in which he will be starring opposite Oscar nominee Tom Hardy (The Revenant) in the lead role.
Dicaprio is the only Oscar winning Actor this year to have been previously nominated for multiple Academy Awards. This was the first Oscar nomination for Larson, Vikander and Rylance, however it is not likely to be their last, considering they all took one home this year. It should prove to be another exciting and presumably revolutionary year in cinema for moviegoers.
