The Oscar-nominated film Flow is now available to watch on the streaming platform Max. The movie, directed by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, was a five-and-one-half year long production that originally started in 2019. The picture is a passion project for Zilbalodis, who wrote, produced, and edited the film. The film utilizes Blender animation software, which is a free and open-source platform, to bring the collection of animated animals to life. The use of this software and the small animation team involved in the project make its recent streaming success that much more significant.
The plot of Flow centers around a cat whose home becomes engulfed in water following a flood. The cat is accompanied by a dog, capybara, and ring-tailed lemur, who together make a home out of a single boat to survive the water-drenched world. Flow currently holds a 97% rating score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Flow debuted at the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and won the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2025 Golden Globes Awards. The film is currently nominated for both Best Animated Feature Film and Best International Feature film at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards.
Recently on Max, Flow has been beating out other films available on the streaming app, including We Live in Time and older blockbuster titles, such as the Final Destination franchise and Central Intelligence.
