In a relatively tame Oscars night this far, host Conan O’Brien joked, “I guess Americans are excited to see somebody finally stand up to a powerful Russian.” The comedian was making the comment in the context of Mikey Madison’s character in Sean Baker’s Anora. The film follows the story of a marriage between a sex worker and the son of a Russian oligarch.
The joke was clearly referencing President Trump’s recent political strategy. On Friday, the President and Vice President Vance made headlines after they berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. Saturday Night Live spoofed the contentious interaction last night.
As far as other political mentions, the No Other Land Oscar winners called on the world to “to stop the ethnic cleansing of Palestinian people.” Presenter Daryl Hannah of Kill Bill fame also added “Slava Ukraine” to her presentation for best editing.
