The first teaser for the upcoming Trainspotting sequel – now T2: Trainspotting – is now online. A simple tease, but striking in that it reminds that the original cast in back – Renton (Ewan McGregor), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewen Bremner) and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) – as Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” blares on the soundtrack. Director Danny Boyle (Steve Jobs, Slumdog Millionaire) is back too.
Little is known on what the central plot will be back for T2: Trainspotting, other than it brings back the gang of friends and frienemies that nearly two decades ago were immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene. The first film (which opened and became an international phenomenon back in 1996 and helped ignite the careers of both director Danny Boyle and McGregor) was based on Irvine Welsh’s unflinching novel centering around a group of heroin addicts as Renton tries to escape the clutches of addiction. Following the first film, Welsh wrote a follow-up novel entitled Porno, which saw the group brought back together with the porn world as the backdrop; it’s unclear still if that will be the focus of T2: Trainspotting. John Hodge, who wrote the screenplay for the first film (and earned an Oscar nomination for his efforts), also returns for the sequel.
In the meantime, we have our first tease. Things have changed certainly – Boyle went on to win an Oscar for directing Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and recently directed both Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet to Oscar nominations in last year’s Steve Jobs while McGregor is about to debut his directorial debut American Pastoral, an adaptation of Philip Roth’s novel. We still have our lust for life.
T2: Trainspotting will open in the U.K. on January 27, 2017 and in North American theaters on February 3, 2017.
