Up-and-coming filmmaker Mark Anthony Green has written the script for and directed his first feature, titled Opus, which is scheduled for release in theaters on March 14, 2025, following a Sundance screening on January 27. Film production company A24 has acquired distribution of Opus and has marketed it as a horror film, based on its recent trailer release. The upcoming film stars John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, and Ayo Edebiri.
Edebiri is known for her Emmy Award winning role in the FX series The Bear, co-starring with Jeremy Allen White. Edebiri has also acted in notable pictures, such as Bottoms and Theater Camp. In addition to live action, she has provided voice acting tracks for animated pictures, including Inside Out 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The plot of Opus concerns a woman named Ariel, played by Edebiri, who is a young writer tasked with documenting a pop star, played by John Malkovich, and his mysterious reappearance after disappearing for thirty years. Ariel is sent to visit the pop star, Alfred Moretti, who appears to be leading a cult that hides nefarious purposes. Moretti is viewed in his cult with illustrations of grandiose obsession by its members, driving the horror of the narrative.
