With the character of Superman being prevalent in pop culture for nearly a hundred years, many fans still debate central themes surrounding the character in his many stories. Film sets are no stranger to this either, as the latest actor to play the Man of Steel revealed that he and director James Gunn disagreed on one particular scene.
James Gunn’s Superman found the character a few years after he became the Man of Tomorrow. Although faced with many threats, especially from the evil Lex Luthor, Superman’s love and adoration for humanity was something the film didn’t shy away from showing, especially when it comes to his girlfriend Lois Lane. But when it came time at the close of the film for Lois to profess her love for him and the two share a kiss, Corenswet and Gunn found themselves imagining different responses from Supes.
Variety gathered both Corenswet and fellow actor Jonathan Bailey, who’s also been on a hot streak this year between Wicked: For Good and Jurassic World: Rebirth. In their discussions of each other’s roles this year, Bailey brought up the kiss between Lois and Superman, mentioning specifically how he enjoyed the detail of Superman chuckling after Lois told him she loves him.
In response, Corenswet explained that it was actually that chuckle that he and Gunn disagreed on. Gunn was pushing for a “solemn” take on the scene, as Corenswet described it, but he wanted to take it the opposite direction. “No! The whole point is, ‘I f—–g know that you love me,’” he said, according to ScreenRant.
However, he did go on to compliment Gunn, saying that he was correct on “90% of everything” when it came to crafting Superman.
