Richard Linklater’s latest film, Last Flag Flying, set in 2003, follows the bittersweet reunion of three Vietnam veterans: Richard “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell), Sal (Bryan Cranston), and Mueller (Laurence Fishburne). Doc, fed up with war, refuses to bury his son, a Marine killed in Iraq, in Arlington Cemetery much to the chagrin of the military. Although their lives have radically diverged since their time in the service together, the trio agree to journey to New Hampshire to lay Doc’s son to rest in his hometown.
Last Flag Flying follows Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!, a spiritual successor to his breakout film Dazed and Confused, and the Oscar-winning Boyhood (Patricia Arquette won in the Best Supporting Actress category). With a lauded career, Linklater has yet to win an Academy Award. Similarly, Carell, Cranston, and Fishburne have all been nominated, but Linklater’s latest just might lead one of them to a win.
From the trailer, Last Flag Flying meditatively explores grief, the ultimate cost of war, and the enduring brotherhood of ex-Marines.
The film will receive a limited release on November 3 from Amazon Studios.
