Chris Pine is making his directorial debut in a new eccentric comedy that is packed with crime, mystery, and pool cleaners. A new trailer dropped for Pine’s new movie Poolman and it promises a wild ride for audiences.
Pine wrote and directed the movie, and also stars as the lead Darren Barrenman, a Los Angeles resident who spends his days attending to the Tahitian Tiki apartment pool and fighting in City Hall to bring about change for his beloved hometown of LA. When Barrenman is approached by femme fatale (DeWanda Wise) to help uncover the truth about business dealings happening in their community, Barrenman and his friends are thrown into an adventure that promises absurdity and laughs for viewers alike. Barrenman will uncover secrets about his hometown and his very own personhood.
The film is complete with a star studded cast, Pine is joined by Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, DeWanda Wise, Stephen Tobolowsky, Clancy Brown, John Ortiz, and Ray Wise.
A teaser for the movie was released, and opens on Pine running into a mansion bare-chested with a gold sparkling robe, and it only gets wackier from there. Pine said about directing Poolman, “Getting to make Poolman was a dream. The artists with whom I collaborated, both in front of and behind the camera, were even dreamier, and shooting in my hometown (On film! Go Kodak!) was the dreamiest. It centers on a pool man named Darren Barrenman, an earnest and concerned, albeit emotionally stunted, citizen who, in his quest to solve a crime, ends up solving the mystery of who he is alongside a wild and misfit group of friends. I hope people can see a bit of themselves in DB. We at Team Poolman hope that our story makes people smile and feel just a little bit lighter in their hearts after leaving the theatre. Love’s Alive In Los Angeles! We hope you enjoy. xx CP.”
Pine wrote the screenplay with Ian Gotler, and the film is produced by Chris Pine, Ian Gotler, Stacey Sher, and Petty Jenkins.
Fans can catch Poolman exclusively in theaters May 10, 2024.
