Octavia E. Butler’s ‘Parable Of The Sower’ Sells to A24 With ‘Naomi Osaka’ Director Garrett Bradley to Direct Feature

Octavia E. Butler’s science fiction novel Parable of the Sower is getting a movie adaptation. A24 has acquired the film rights, Deadline confirmed.

Deadline also confirmed that the first book in a two-book series would be directed by Garrett Bradley.

This is big news for Bradley because this feature film will be her first with a major studio.

Bradley has directed the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated documentary Time from Amazon Studios. She recently directed the docu-series Naomi Osaka, about the Japanese professional tennis player that was just released on Netflix.

Parable of the Sower is set in a near-future Los Angeles ravaged by societal breakdown; a teenager with a special gift must lead humanity in a struggle to save civilization from destruction.

The novel, which was initially published in 1993, has lately been rediscovered by fans and appeared on the New York Times bestseller list in Sept 2020, for the first time, giving Butler her lifelong dream.

Butler is a big deal; in fact, she is a literary icon and one of the most cherished sci-fi writers. Butler has even won awards like a Hugo and a Nebula multiple times and received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant (the first science fiction writer to win it).
