‘Obesssion’ Writer/Director In Talks To Helm ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ At A24

Ahead of its May release, Focus Features’ supernatural horror film Obsession‘s writer/director/editor Curry Barker has already scored his next project. A24 acquired the rights  to the decade-spanning slasher IP, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this February. Now it has been announced that Barker will write and direct the latest franchise entry for the studio. This production comes separate from A24’s also conceptualized television program that has Glen Powell and JT Mollner attached in production roles.

Barker got his start in filmmaking through YouTube sketch comedy. He shot and released an $800 budget horror movie that went on to receive over 2 million views. This chain of events lead Obsession to be a hot commodity at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. The less than $1 million budget film sold to Focus Features for roughly $15 million, marking it as one of the biggest sales ever for an indie film.

Barker’s young age and new direction for the Chainsaw franchise in collaboration with hot distributors A24 promises a fresh take for the franchise, with saw Tobe Hooper’s Leatherface hack his way through screens for the first time in 1974. Barker’s second project after Obsession, titled Anything But Ghosts, just wrapped principal photography. The filmmaker has expressed his love for the horror franchise in the past. The project is currently in pre-production.
