It seems like Curry Barker’s wish came true as his new horror feature, Obsession, has conquered another impressive feat in its already outstanding box office performance. Obsession opened in theaters on May 15th and grossed approximately $17 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, blowing its reported budget of $750,000 out of the water.
Barker’s second directorial feature-length horror came in number one at the domestic box office on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week, grossing approximately $9.7 million over those three days. Beating out blockbusters such as Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael, Obsession has become the cheapest film to top the box office since Blumhouse’s Paranormal Activity, totaling out to $27 million worldwide. The 2007 found footage horror went on to gross $193 million worldwide against a reported budget of just $15,000.
While Obsession has not made such a feat in the box office, it has done something that horror doesn’t usually do: make audiences and critics agree in such an overwhelmingly positive way. The feature holds a 95% rating on both the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, a rarity for a theatrical horror release. Some reviews include,
It’s Navarrette, though, who truly gives the film it’s mojo. [She] delivers such a virtuosic performance as the spellbound Nikki that she’ll induce nightmares for anyone who’s ever wondered what exactly the hell is going on with their romantic partner. – Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter
Inde Navarrette is especially fantastic here, shifting between genuinely creepy horror moments and sickly sweet adoration. Her performance is wonderfully layered, blending off-putting line delivery with the warped physicality this kind of role requires. The actress is a highlight. Michael Johnston is also great, especially as his puppy dog heart eyes shift from surprise and horror the longer the film goes on. Mae Abdulbaki, Screenrant
A simple, well-trodden concept transforms into a shocking and unsettling descent into abject horror in Barker’s capable hands, ensuring that his latest is destined to become horror’s latest, well, obsession. – Megan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting
It’s the perfect next chapter for Barker… Obsession is satisfyingly slick proof that he knows just what to do when leveling up to a different platform. Benjamin Lee, Guardian
Obsession centers around a hopeless romantic named Bear (Michael Johnston) who breaks the “One Wish Willow” to wish for his crush’s (Inde Navarrette) love. But this takes a dark and twisted turn as he finds himself getting exactly what he desired, but at a “sinister price.” The feature was written by Barker, and the ensemble is rounded out by Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter.
Obsession is now in theaters everywhere.
