There is something powerful about seeing a world that once lived in the pages of a book begin to take shape on the big screen. At the presentation of Children of Blood and Bone during New York Comic Con, audiences were invited into the world of Orïsha through an exclusive look at the film’s trailer, its elaborate sets, and the creative vision behind bringing Tomi Adeyemi’s beloved fantasy novel to life. The cast of the panel included Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give, The Darkest Minds), Thuso Mbedu (Task, Side Dish), Damson Idris (Snowfall, F1), Tosin Cole (House Party, Resolution), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked, The Outsider), Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die, Captain Marvel), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange, Back Rooms), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Gaurd, The Secret Life of Bees) with moderator Rian Johnson (Knives Out, Looper).
At the center of the story is Zélie Adebola, a young woman who fights to restore magic to a kingdom where it has been stripped from her people. Alongside her brother, Tzain, and the royal siblings Amari and Inan, Zélie becomes part of a struggle that challenges the foundations of power in Orïsha. What makes this story especially compelling is that the conflict is not simply between good and evil. It is also about the complicated relationships between parents and children, siblings and rivals, rulers and the people they govern.
Among the footage shown was an early scene featuring Viola Davis (The Woman King, The Help) as Mama Agba, with young characters fighting one another using sticks in front of her. It is a brief but revealing image. Before the story unfolds into its larger battles and supernatural conflicts, the scene introduces a world in which discipline, physical preparation, and survival are essential.
Music was another memorable element of the presentation. The playlist was described as being made up almost entirely of Afrobeats, with one exception. That choice offers an intriguing way of thinking about the film’s sound and cultural identity.
Children of Blood and Bone will premiere in theaters on January 15 2027.
