Previewed in a Special Screening at TIFF and making it’s U.S. debut at NYFF, Roger Michell’s (Enduring Love, Venus, Notting Hill) Le Week-End, an adult comedy-drama will open in limited release next Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2014. Popular British actor Jim Broadbent (Iron Lady, Gangs of New York), an Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor in Iris, Lindsay Duncan (Under The Tuscan Sun), and Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, The Fly) star in the film.
Broadbent is Nick Burrows, an aging baby-boomer once filled with the notion that he could change the world and make a difference. Nick settled for a good job teaching at a University and married Meg (Duncan), who also opted for a secure teaching gig. Now both are being edged out of their careers by younger models of themselves. Their once passionate marriage has long lost its spark. So for their 30th anniversary, they decide to splurge and take a second-honeymoon in Paris, but their enjoyment is threatened at every turn as they are confronted not only by their constant barbs at one another, but the appearance of Nick’s far more successful college friend (played by Goldblum) who represents everything the couple wishes they had.
Scribe Hanif Kureishi (My Beautiful Launderette) has worked with director Roger Michell on two previous films, The Mother and Venus. His script for Le Week-End is winning high praise, Emma Dibdin of Digital Spy calls the film an acerbic comedy and a “highly intelligent, intimate, lived-in drama that packs a startling punch”.
