Bad news for all the Killmonger fans out there, because according to Screen Rant he will not be returning for Black Panther 2. Earlier this year there were a lot of rumors surrounding the possibility that he would appear in the sequel. However, Kevin Feige has confirmed that Killmonger will not be coming back. For the time being he is officially dead, and it is safe to assume that he will stay dead for any future movies.
This is a shame because Killmonger is considered to be one of more popular villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel fans were drawn to the character thanks to Micheal B. Jordan’s performance, as well as the villain’s interesting backstory and motivations. He’s also one of Marvel’s first major antagonist to be played by a non-white actor.
Another reason why Killmonger is such an important character is that most of the MCU villains are considered bland. Villains have always been a weak spot for Marvel movies, and there are plenty of articles that highlight why they’re unmemorable or disappointing. With a few exceptions like Loki and Thanos, most Marvel villains repeat the cliches of being power-hungry flat characters with similar powers to the hero, usually getting killed at the end of movie.
While Killmonger follows a lot of these villain cliches, his sympathetic backstory, connection to Black Panther, and unique motives elevate his character from previous antagonists. It is fine if Killmonger does not return to Black Panther 2, so long as his successor proves equally memorable.
