Last summer the live stage recording of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony winning musical Hamilton was released on the streaming service Disney+. Many theater fans rejoiced at being able to see a stage musical since theaters have been shut down due to the pandemic, and for many people this was their first chance to see the popular musical be performed.
Since the recording was so well received critically, many people assumed that it would receive recognition at this year’s Oscars. Unfortunately for fans of the musical Screen Rant reports that Hamilton is not eligible for Oscars. According to The Hollywood Reporter the Academy disqualified Hamilton from the Oscars under Rule Two, Section G.
Even if Hamilton does not qualify for Oscars, it has already received a lot of recognition from award shows. The musical currently holds the record for the most Tony nominations at sixteen nominations. For Tony wins Hamilton holds the second place spot for most awards with eleven wins, the only musical to have more Tonys is The Producers which has twelve. Of course the Hamilton musical earned a lot of other theater and drama awards too besides Tonys.
Also Hamilton is still eligible for many other important film awards including the Golden Globes. The musical’s cast members can also be considered for the SAG awards.
