Off-kilter romantic comedy The Lobster recently opened in the U.S. and has since become an art-house hit following it’s critical raves first received when the film premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Rightly so, upcoming projects from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos appear to be getting stronger attention and luring in major talent. The Hollywood Reporter wrote today that Oscar winner Nicole Kidman appears to be talks to join Lobster star Colin Farrell in Lanthimos’ next film entitled The Killing of Sacred Deer.
Lanthimos penned the script with writing partner Efthimis Fillipou for what’s being described as a psychological thriller with a bit of a supernatural bent. In the film, Farrell is set to portray a surgeon attempting to ingratiate a troubled teenager into his family. Unthinkable (and likely quite strange) measures must be taken once the teenager’s actions become more anguished. If she comes aboard, Kidman would portray the wife of Farrell’s character. A late summer start date in planned with A24 Films handing U.S. distribution (as they did with The Lobster).
The Lobster marked Lanthimos’ first English language feature (the starry cast included Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw, Léa Seydoux and John C. Rielly) while the 2010 film Dogtooth put the filmmaker on the international map; the film earned a surprise Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-Language Feature that year.
For Kidman, this would clinch another auteur for her filmography. She will next be seen in John Cameron Mitchell’s How to Talk with Girls at Parties and the Oscar hopeful Lion, both of which are due later this year. Kidman is also attached to co-star in Sofia Coppola’s upcoming western The Beguiled and recently wrapped the HBO limited series Big Little Lies starring opposite Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley.
