Do you think a heavyset English fellow learning to salsa dance is inherently funny? The people behind an upcoming romantic-comedy, straight from the UK sure do. Cuban Fury treads pretty familiar ground: a down-on-his-luck guy learns a skill from a surly aged mentor and faces off against an arrogant rival in hopes of winning the affections of a woman he fancies. What may pique an audience’s interest is the level of talent involved with the project, and the fact that, based on its new trailer, no one’s taking the well-worn premise too seriously.
Nick Frost (the heavyset English fellow in question, whom you may recognize from Edgar Wright’s “Three Flavours Cornetto” trilogy) stars as the hapless chap who takes up salsa dancing to impress his attractive boss played by Rashida Jones (the attractive nurse from Parks and Recreation). Standing is in Frost’s ways is a testosterone-fueled chauvinist of a co-worker (who says things like, “let’s skip dinner, and go straight to pudding” while pointing at his crotch) played by Chris O’Dowd (the nice Irish cop from Bridesmaids). Helping Frost overcome his lack of coordination and a body-type not normally suited to energetic dancing is a surly aged mentor played by Ian McShane (Blackbeard in Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides).
Cuban Fury is set for a February 14, 2014 release in U.K. cinemas. Entertainment One has the U.S. distribution rights, but has not yet announce release plans (theatrical or otherwise).
