Disney has released a new trailer for its upcoming holiday release Into the Woods, the long-awaited screen adaptation of the beloved 1987 Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine Broadway musical.
The Christmas release, starring Meryl Streep (August, Osage County), James Corden (Begin Again), Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow), Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), and Chris Pine (Star Trek: Into Darkness), is based on the Tony-winning musical of the same name. The tale revolves around a disparate group of fairy-tale characters all seeking to obtain their heart’s desires, only to find that they should be careful what they wish for. Rob Marshall, Oscar-nominated for his work on 2002’s Chicago, directs from Lapine’s screenplay, based on his original book for the musical.
The trailer provides an idea of the sweeping tone of the musical, and gives us a good glimpse of Johnny Depp in his role of The Wolf. Rumors have circulated that the involvement of Disney might cause some of the more adult themes featured in the original book to be toned down, but statements from Sondheim himself declare it to be a faithful adaptation of the show. A recent featurette provides some behind-the-scenes detail on the project, which is slated to hit theaters on Christmas Day.
