The movie adaptation of the New York Times best seller Crying in H Mart has been placed on hold. The film following the life of Japanese Breakfast singer Michelle Zauner was to be directed by White Lotus’ Will Sharpe. In a recent interview with SSense, Zauner attributed the hold to the loss of Sharpe and the Hollywood strikes.
The 2021 memoir received critical acclaim, even making it onto Barack Obama’s favorite book list. The title reflects the spirit of the story as Zauner contemplates her relationship with her late mother. She expresses her grief with an honest portrayal of growing up in Oregon with a Caucasian father and Korean mother. The Grammy-nominated singer connects with her mother’s memory through food.
Addressing the decision, Zauner stated, “I spent a year working on the screenplay, which was a tough but rewarding process. I still have faith it will get made someday, but it’s not happening anytime soon.” Fans need not worry though. Zauner’s indie-pop band announced their first album release in four years and they recently dropped a single titled Orlando in Love. Japanese Breakfast will be performing on both weekends of Coachella.
Zauner plans to write an additional memoir over the next few years: “It’s going to be a long process, but I’m excited about it.”
