Warner Brothers’ fan event DC fandome kicked off to a great start with a digital panel featuring the cast and director of Wonder Woman 1984, who unveiled the newest and main trailer for the film. Patty Jenkins‘ sequel to the first highly successful Wonder Woman film was scheduled to release this summer, but has been delayed to October if all goes well in the gradual reopening of theaters across the US.
This trailer shows off more new footage than we have ever seen before. It starts off with shots of young Diana (Gal Godot) running alongside fellow Amazonian warriors in an Olympics of sorts on the island of Themsycira. This may hint at more footage of Diana’s time growing up on the island and more glimpses of the the island warriors before the massacre that occurred at the beginning of the first installment.
This sequel is sure to pack a punch and has some intense visuals, such as Diana swinging from lightning bolt to lightning bolt with her golden glowing lasso in a stormy sky. The stakes are set as we learn more about villains Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Ann Minerva (Kristen Wiig) aka Cheetah. Minerva has it out for Diana, telling her “You’ve always had everything, while people like me have had nothing.” Working alongside Lord, she transforms herself into a large cat-like creature to make herself a dangerous opponent.
The trailer also showcases the return of love interest Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) who is seen sharing an embrace with Diana during their surprising reunion, taking a romantic stroll with her in front of the Washington Monument, and trying on various 80’s garb to fit into this new era he finds himself in.
One thing this trailer does make very clear is that the film will not be making its way to On-Demand or Digital any time soon. The clip ends with the bold lettering of “Only in Theaters.” As of now, the release date is scheduled for October 2, 2020.
