New ‘When Marnie Was There’ Trailer – Seriously, You’re Going to Cry

Hope you like your artistry with a generous dose of sadness, because a newer (longer) trailer for Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s animated film, When Marnie Was There is here. The adaptation of Joan G. Robinson’s comes from anime giant Studio Ghibli, and looks like it will continue the studio’s trend of producing lovely looking pictures that make audiences feel things. The new trailer exudes awkward joy, melancholic curiosity, and crushing disapointment, all embodies in the friendship of the two main characters .

To anyone familiar with Ghibli’s repertoire – which includes Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, and the more recent release, The Wind Rises – this onslaught of emotion will seem par for the course (though not unwelcome or dry). Early reviews of When Marnie Was There have spoken positively on the emotional content, with one from Twitchfilm concluding, “Tthe central mystery unravels at a timely pace that will have you guessing at the true nature of the central relationship right up until its tearful conclusion.”

The film comes to Japanese theaters July 19th. If The Wind Rises, From Up On Poppy Hill, and The Secret World of Arrietty are anything to go by, a U.S. release with a dub cast of English-speaking celebrities will eventually follow.
