Oscar-nominated John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) is returning as a director. The first film grossed $136.8 million worldwide on only a $10 million budget. Although the first movie sky-rocketed at the box office, Madden wants this film to feel fresh. In an interview with USA Today, he expressed, “If somebody simply walked into this film knowing nothing about the first, they would be just fine.”
In addition to feeling connected to this movie in it’s own separate way, he also felt strongly impacted by India. Madden explained, “You just cannot escape the warmth, the lack of assumption, the positivity of the people.” He added, “There’s something transforming about the place.”

The sequel welcomes returning characters Sonny (Dev Patel), Evelyn (Judi Dench), Muriel (Maggie Smith), Douglas (Bill Nighy), Jean (Penelope Wilton), Norman (Ronald Pickup), and Madge (Celia Imrie).
