IFC Films has dropped the official trailer for their upcoming film The Luckiest Man in America starring Paul Walter Hauser, Walton Goggins and Maisie Williams. The film is based on the true story of Michael Larson, a man who won over $110,000 from playing the system on the game show Press Your Luck.
In the trailer, we see Michael Larson (played by Paul Walter Hauser) studying the game show Press Your Luck. The ice cream truck driver applies to appear on the show and is successful. He struggles on the first game, but everything changes once he moves on to the “spin” section of the show. Larson begins playing the second game, but instead of backing down after one or two wins, he keeps rolling. This comes as a shock to the host (Walton Goggins) and the showrunners. Eventually, the showrunners and executives hatch a plan to stop Larson from winning any more money. In the trailer they say, “He’s not playing the game right. We’ve gotta scare him!” Tensions rise as the studio attempts to stop the game before Larson manages to win it all.
The real life Michael Larson spent months memorizing the light patterns on an 18-space board in order to ensure he won every single time. The board was supposed to have a 1 in 6 chance of a bust, but since he memorized the 5 patterns, he ended up spining 45 times in a row. He walked away with the largest sum of money from a single episode at the time, and CBS attempted to stop the payment, insisting that he cheated. Ultimately, it was found that he simply played the system, and he received the money.
The Luckiest Man in America premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September of 2024, and now IFC Films is giving it a theatrical release on April 4, 2025. The cast includes Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya, BlacKkKlansman), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, Fallout), Shamier Anderson (John Wick: Chapter 4, Race) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, The New Mutants). The film was directed by Samir Oliveros and written by Samir Oliveros and Maggie Briggs.
