Cult director of Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok has another film for this holiday season. In the vein of his other work like Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Taika Waititi‘s next project is smaller comedy satirizing Nazis and Adolf Hitler. The film, entitled Jojo Rabbit, follows a young German boy during World War II who is part of a Nazi youth training camp and is fascinated with Hitler himself. Things take a bit of a turn when he finds out that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is holding a Jewish girl as a refugee in his home.
A new trailer was released for the upcoming comedy, showcasing the typical quriky sense of humor Watiti is known for. Waititi also often stars in the films he directs, and here he plays the imaginary friend of the main boy who also happens to be a goofy version of Adolf Hitler. Despite the film taking place in a historical period of terror and genocide, Jojo Rabbit seems to have a ton of heart as it is more of a film about learning to accept differences and to think beyond widespread hateful ideology. It is definitely evident in the trailer’s heartfelt moments with Jojo and the Jewish girl, colored by Waititi’s quirky sense of humor. This is also elevated with the trailer’s music using German versions of David Bowie’s Heroes and The Monkeys’ I’m A Believer. In divisive times like these, this film seems oddly appropriate and could potentially be another fun hit for the director’s ever growing career.
Jojo Rabbit is set for release October 18th, 2019.
