Many die hard Sonic the Hedgehog fans were left mortified at Sonic’s live-action design from the first Paramount film trailer’s, leading to director Jeff Fowler’s announcement that his production team were planning to redesign the character. This cause the film to be delayed from November 2019 to February of 2020. Thankfully though, all that extra work fixing Sonic’s design paid off, as this newly released trailer will definitely satisfy fans of the video game character in spades.
The trailer starts with Sonic running around through what looks to be the iconic Green Hill Zone as he ends up being transported to Earth. He then teams up with a police officer named Tom (James Marsden) to stop an evil scientist named Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). There are more gags shown in this trailer including Sonic playing baseball with himself, reading The Flash comics and interacting with Tom’s dog. There’s also a ton of action with Sonic fighting off the various robots released by Robotnik, as well as numerous comedic bits.
The biggest improvement this new Sonic trailer has over the first is, of course, the design of Sonic himself. This time his design embraces a more cartoony look in line with the game, with his eyes and mouth looking less grotesquely realistic as seen in the first trailer. They also gave him shoes similar to the ones from the Genesis games and gloves, which the original design was oddly lacking. While some may debate on the actual quality of the film, most will agree that this redesign makes Sonic the Hedgehog look immensely better than when viewers first laid eyes on him.
Sonic the Hedgehog is set for release February 14th, 2020. Watch the full trailer below.
