Today saw the release of the second trailer for the upcoming biographical legal drama On the Basis of Sex starring Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Jones will star alongside Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Jack Reynor, Cailee Spaeny, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates. The film is based on the life of Supreme Court Justice and her many struggles with sexism in education and beginning her legal career.
In the trailer we see Ginsburg at a dinner seemingly upon acceptance to Harvard law school where she mocks the sexist ideals and remarks of the dinner’s host. It then shows Ginsburg challenging the ideas of gender roles regarding the stay-at-home mother and nine-to-five father. She talks to a couple people of the unfair nature of sex laws and the existence of discrimination against women, before proposing to her husband that they topple the system. A number of shots are shown of Ginsburg encountering opposing peoples, entering ACLU offices, and interacting with her family. We then see her preparing to argue the case of Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue.
The film seems to serve as a dramatization and romanticizing of the origin of Ginsburg as a political force before her time as a Supreme Court Justice. It is directed by Mimi Leder, which is a dramatic and biographical turn from her usual filmography of thrillers or disaster films, and is written by Daniel Stiepleman.
The film will have a wide release on December 25 (Christmas Day), distributed by Focus Features.
