Hollywood continues to court faith-based audiences, as Nicolas Cage faces The Rapture in the upcoming Christian-themed movie Left Behind. The trailer above, which expands on the movie’s first brief trailer, shows Cage piloting a plane when, in an instant, millions of people seemingly disappear into thin air. On the ground, Cage’s daughter, played by Cassi Thomson (HBO’s Big Love), must try to survive amid the growing chaos.
Chad Michael Murray (Home of the Brave), Lea Thompson (J. Edgar), and Jordin Sparks (Sparkle) also star, with longtime stunt coordinator Vic Armstrong making his directorial debut. In his long career Armstrong has worked on many high-profile projects, including Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Thor (2011), War of the Worlds (2005), and Gangs of New York (2002), among many, many others. Cage, ever the enigma, continues to add to his eclectic resume. He recently starred in the indie drama Joe, and will next be seen in the topical drama The Runner, based around the BP oil spill.
Based on a bestselling series of novels co-written by Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye, this new adaptation is actually a reboot of sorts of a previous movie based on the books starring, who else, Kirk Cameron. The timing of this new movie is interesting, given that the identically-themed The Leftovers is currently airing on HBO. That series will end its first season on August 31st, about five weeks before Left Behind‘s October 3rd theatrical release date. Whether audiences will have had their appetites properly whetted by the HBO show, or instead already have had their fill of The Rapture, remains to be seen.
