The monster is soon to be alive and on the loose. Guillermo del Toro’s new spin on the iconic story of Frankenstein is set to be released soon, but has been generating more anticipation as of late.
Del Toro’s Frankenstein is based on Mary Shelley’s novel of the same name from 1818. The story follows a scientist who seeks out a new way of creating life, but the being he creates turns out to become a monster from his worst nightmares.
ScreenRant noted that Frankenstein is one of the most heavily adapted stories when it comes to film. The most iconic of these was James Whale’s 1931 classic Frankenstein. Starring Colin Clive and Mae Clarke, Whale’s film became a benchmark of film, with the film’s depiction of the monster, played by Borris Karloff, permeating pop culture since he donned the makeup and attire nearly a hundred years ago.
Gamesradar was able to reveal a photo that shows star Oscar Isaac in costume as Doctor Victor Frankenstein. Screenrant also made note that the attire worn by Isaac in the photo reflects the Victorian time period that the story initially took place in.
Frankenstein doesn’t mark the first time that del Toro has taken to reimagining a classic. Just a few years ago, he released his spin on Pinocchio.
Similarly, Pinocchio has been adapted several times since the story’s publication in 1883, but del Toro looked at it under a new lens, placing the story in Italy during the 1930’s as fascism begins to spread through the country. Del Toro’s Pinocchio went on to win Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards.
