What happens when a homemade sex tape goes viral? That’s the precarious predicament in store for in the upcoming raunchy comedy Sex Tape starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. The film marks a reunion for the actors with their Bad Teacher director Jake Kasden and was written by Kate Angelo (The Back-Up Plan.) Today the film, to be released this summer courtesy of Sony, unleashed a red band trailer to the R-rated comedy. The film also marks a bit of a return for both leading actors, both of whom went big in R-rated sex comedies in the past. Diaz, famously, became a household name playing the titular Mary in 1998’s There’s Something About Mary and Segel, a veteran of the Judd Apatow troupe, broke through with his starring role in 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Hoping to spice up their relationship after ten years of marriage, Annie and Jay (Diaz and Segel) queue their iPad and film themselves in the throes of passion. Unwittingly, the clip goes through the iCloud and gets sent to their network of friends and family. In a state of panic, they decide to do whatever it takes to erase their naughty video to salvage their reputations. Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), Elle Kemper (Bridesmaids) and Rob Lowe (Behind the Candelabra) co-star.
Diaz was last seen on screen in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor and has two other wide releases coming to theaters this year – The Other Woman opposite Leslie Mann and Annie opposite Jamie Foxx and Beast of the Southern Wild‘s Quvenzhané Wallis. Segel just wrapped up his role on the long-running television series How I Met Your Mother and is currently filming The End of the Tour, a drama directed by James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) opposite Jesse Eisenberg. Sex Tape opens on July 25th.
