Exciting news on the film Prey seems to be a promising fresh start to the Predator franchise. The film is taking a turn into uncharted territory for the franchise, diving into the expanded universe of the Predator world. Canonically, the films have hinted that the predator creatures have been on earth from the beginning of humanity. Namely, in Predator 2 Danny Glover’s character receives an prize from the Predator leader: a flintlock pistol dated to the 18th century. This jaw dropping revelation of “They’ve been here the whole time” is look into to the franchise that has yet to be explored on film, with the comics taking the world of the Predator into the realms of comedy (Archie Meets The Predator) and historical fiction (Predator: 1718).
This upcoming film documents the Comanche tribe meeting the Predator in combat. The official synopsis is as follows: “Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.”
The director, Dan Trachtenberg of 10 Cloverfield Lane, has stated that the filmmakers are trying to make an respectful adaptation of the tribe: “The filmmakers were committed to creating a film that provides an accurate portrayal of the Comanche and brings a level of authenticity that rings true to its Indigenous peoples”
