A lot of people have been demanding to see more strong female characters in movies, and their wish is about to be granted because according to Deadline, the very literally strong Pippi Longstocking is getting a movie adaptation.
For those who did not grow up with Pippi Longstocking, she was the protagonist of a series of Swedish children’s books that were written by author Astrid Lindgren, and published in the 1940’s. In the books Pippi is a little redheaded orphan girl who lives with her horse and her monkey named Mr. Nilsson. She is famous for her eccentric and clever personality and for being “the strongest girl in the world” as she has the strength to lift a full sized horse with one hand. Pippi makes friends with two kids who live nearby and the three children go on many adventures together.
This new movie will not be the first time Pippi Longstocking appeared on film. In 1988 Columbia Pictures released The New Adventures Of Pippi Longstocking, which starred Tami Erin as Pippi, and before that in the 40’s Sweden released a movie adaption of their own.
Producer David Heyman, who was the producer for Paddington and its sequel Paddington 2, is partnering is partnering with Studiocanal to create a movie based on Lindgren’s books. Heyday Films and Studiocanal previously collaborated on the Paddington movies and the two studios are currently working together on a film adaptation of The Secret Garden.
