A new Men In Black film is on the way, but it will not follow the story of the original cast. Instead, it will center around fresh set of agents within the organization, according to Hollywood Reporter. A fixture in the franchise, working on the films since the beginning, Steven Spielberg will be returning as execute producer for the new addition to the franchise. Sony has already signed on Art Marcum and Matt Holloway and to compose the screenplay. The two writers are no strangers to big budget films, having also penned the first Iron Man script.
The original Men In Black trilogy has garnered Sony over $1.5 billion across the world, with critics giving the films fairly decent reviews. The films have been carried by the duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, whose already iconic placement in the franchise will create potential pressure for the director (who has yet to be chosen or announced) to capture a similar dynamic. The director will have to utilize their two leads’ roles in an attempt to either emulate or surpass the original team. It is even possible that the film will feature cameos from the original cast, which has not been discussed or ruled out by Sony publicly.
Sony has already put a May 17, 2019 release date on the film, providing only two years to film and produce the entire movie. It will be interesting to see if a quality film will be produced successfully or if it will flop from the lack of production time.
