The concept of Pixar and Disney’s upcoming Lightyear film being an origin story about the “real” space ranger on whom Toy Story‘s Buzz Lightyear is supposedly based has already taken viewers off guard because it is unclear if this is the Buzz Lightyear fans have come to love over the years. Questions have arisen that generated some doubt about whether Toy Story has been set in some futuristic world all along without realizing it or if the studios were skirting around the fact that Lightyear is an in-universe movie about Buzz. It’s anyone’s guess until the movie comes out and answers are revealed.
The latest teaser for Lightyear, directed by Angus MacLane (Mater’s Tall Tales), does set out the broad strokes of the film’s premise and reveals yet another intriguing twist to its story.
Buzz (Chris Evans) and his earthbound associate Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) are finally preparing for a launch using one of Star Command’s first gates, which appears to be meant to allow long-distance travel. Though Buzz’s solo voyage through the gate seems to be a relative success at first, when he lands on what appears to be an unknown planet, his robot cat helper Sox (Peter Sohn) informs him that he has somehow traveled decades into the future. While one of the first faces Buzz encounters in the future is a pleasant one that he misidentifies as Alisha, Izzy (Keke Palmer) reminds him that Alisha was her grandmother. It rapidly becomes evident that Buzz has traveled well beyond anyone’s expectations.
Lightyear officially lands in theaters on June 17. Check out the newest trailer below:
