New ‘Hamilton’ Documentary With Original Cast Set to Debut on Disney+ Alongside the Filmed Musical

The excited buzz around the filmed version of the award winning Hamilton Broadway show just got a little louder. It was revealed that a new behind-the-scenes documentary of the musical is also arriving to Disney+ on Friday, July 3. Featuring the original Hamilton cast, the documentary will premiere on the same day as the filmed musical.

Entertainment Weekly was the first to break the news of the documentary, Hamilton In-Depth With Kelley Carter. Produced by The Undefeated, ESPN+ and Disney+, Hamilton In-Depth With Kelley Carter will include the reunion of the original Broadway cast to discuss the show’s origins, success and legacy.

“The story and subject matter that Hamilton covers, and the creative vision of its architects and actors, are more timely than ever,” said Jimmy Pitaro, president of ESPN and co-chair, Disney Media Networks, in a statement. “The Undefeated, and Kelley L. Carter, are uniquely positioned to help connect audiences – whether they have never seen the show, or have seen it 10 times – to the creative process, people and significance of Hamilton as it debuts on Disney+.”

A virtual roundtable will be conducted by The Undefeated journalist Kelley L. Carter in conversation with original Broadway cast members Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr., Christopher Jackson, Phillipa Soo and Renée Elise Goldsberry, as well as Hamilton Thomas Kail.

In a statement, Carter said, “The cast of Hamilton didn’t come to play. They are accomplished performers who created genre-shifting art, but they also understand this unprecedented time in history and why their voices matter. This special isn’t just about one of the most important pieces of work to ever play on Broadway. This is about how art inspires activation. And, well, how activation inspires great art.”

The discussion will address a varying range of topics, including the origin story of Hamilton; the cast and creative team’s special connection to the story, characters, imagery and music; the show’s value in pop culture and society; and what the Hamilton narrative can contribute in the context of continuous dialogue about systemic racism and social injustice in society. The origins of the filmed version of the musical will also be discussed, as well as what the cast and creative team hope for the film.

Fans and curious audiences alike can view Hamilton In-Depth with Kelley Carter when it debuts on July 3, exclusively on Disney+ and TheUndefeated.com.
