New Footage Of James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Divides Parts Of Social Media

On Thursday, Warner Bros. and DC Studios released a new Sneak Peek at James Gunn’s Superman. While the nearly five-minute long clip has already amassed nearly 7 million views on YouTube, and has  been received fairly positively, there have been some mixed reactions on social media.

Much of the debate on social media over this new clip stems on people’s disagreements on how this clip portrays Superman. Many are asking whether Superman should be seen as more impervious and god-like, or more human and vulnerable? Many also seem to disagree with the clip’s tone, as some are left asking if it’s better to have a more lighthearted or serious Superman.

Many of the comments stem from people who still prefer Zack Snyder’s take on the character, such as in this comment: “Snyder’s Superman literally took a nuke at point blank range and healed from the sun without feeling any pain from its radiation, which is accurate in the Comics. Gunn’s mediocre interpretation is screaming in agony.”

Some of the comments also seem to disagree with the more comedic tone and the focus on Krypto, such as in this comment: “James Gunn gets it, they said. He won’t make it a stupid comedy, they said. They said he understood the assignment. That was the worst Superman clip I have ever seen. It’s an utter joke and it’s all about Krypto.”

There are however, some positive comments from those who seem to be liking Gunn’s new take on the character, and particularly, the upbeat positive tone. Here’s one positive comment sating this: “By far, far and away, the best part of this trailer is that there is ZERO cynicism, zero moral grayness, zero self loathing, zero sense that Superman is a ‘vigilante.’ It’s a romantic, idealistic, innocent vision which is pure awesome.” Other comments seem to like the new interpretation of the Fortress of solitude. “Love the design of Fortress of Solitude and the giant double doors with the House of El symbol that lights up”, says one comment.

It’s left to be seen what people’s full reaction to the movie will be when the film releases in theaters on July 11th. Check out the footage below.
