A true teaser: no dialogue, small flashes of crowds and paparazzi, and only profile shots of the main actress for the first half half of the clip. The first trailer for Diana has landed and it gives our first look at Naomi Watts in the titular role as the People’s Princess.
Having premiered at Cannes last month, Diana was one of the films acquired by U.S. distributer. Entertainment One will be in charge of American distribution. Though the film is set to hit theaters on September 20 in the U.K., eOne is planning for a release later this year, presumably during Oscar season.
And this biopic is primed to be an early Oscar contender with its talent. Naomi Watts has been nominated twice for Leading Actress, most recently for last year’s The Impossible. Since 2008 seven acting awards have been given to thespians playing real life individuals, with numerous more being nominated. Additionally, the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, helmed the best foreign picture Oscar-nominee Downfall.
But unlike the recent A King’s Speech and The Queen royalty dramas, Diana will take place outside the royal family and focus on the part of the Princess of Wales’s life after her divorce from Prince Charles. Centered around the last two years of her life, the biopic will instead delve into her relationship with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan (played by Lost star Naveen Andrews).
The trailer itself is a work of art, as it easily portrays the suffocating effect of the paparazzi while simultaneously making the audience believe that Watts is indeed Diana. And though the film actually looks quite compelling in terms of its visual composition, everyone will be seeing this movie for the performance of its 44-year-old star.
