It seems we jumped the gun bit the other day, as we now have something more to go on with Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar than “scientists travel through a wormhole.”
They’re chasing planets where it might be possible to plant new crops, it seems, as corn has become the last one on Earth. This first glimpse deeper into Interstellar comes courtesy of the Macleod Gazette Online, the local paper of Fort Macleod, Alberta, a small town which played host to the production, including leading man Matthew McConaughey. According to location manager Laszlo Uhrik, “The scene was of the main character [McConaughey] driving, trying to outrun a dust storm which eventually catches up to him and overtakes the truck in the town.” During filming, a large dust cloud practical effect was in evidence, created with a celulose-based, biodegradable substance. Presumably this will be combined with some sort of computer generated visual effect for the final shot.
Uhrik went on to say that the location was chosen not only for its visual interest, with plenty of historical buildings, but because of an abundance of storage and staging areas. “It becomes a very easy place to shoot,” said Uhrik, “and that was our experience.”
Interstellar is due out November 7, 2014.
