World War II has always been a hot topic for war films, but many of said films focus heavily on the American, British, and German side of the war; yet the Russians, who played an important role in the war, have very little films made about the military powerhouse. Armando Iannucci, in his typical fashion, will bring to light the death of one of the most infamous dictators of all time, Joseph Stalin, as seen in this new trailer for The Death of Stalin:
The film, according to the trailer, is “loosely based” on a true story, and will focus on the story of Stalin’s death and the political battle and chaos that ensued with who would be the successor. The film is also based on Fabien Nury’s graphic novel of the same name. The cast is quite large and strong, including Adam McLoughlin, Jeffrey Tambor, Olga Kurylenko, Steve Buscemi, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, and Michael Palin.
Iannucci, known for being the creator of the multi-award winning Veep and his comedy cult classics In the Loop and The Thick of It, will be putting his odd comedic touches to the film, with a script by himself, David Schneider, and Ian Martin. The Death of Stalin will be swearing and shooting its way into theaters October 20th after its worldwide premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
