Having not yet seen a trailer for the hugely-anticipated video game adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, any image released from production is a prized piece of information for fans awaiting the film. The video game tells the story of a modern-day assassin who travels back to the times of his ancestors and ends up getting involved in a major conflict between two rivaling factions. The historical setting is one of the biggest appeals for the series, having been set in Italy during the Renaissance, the French Revolution, Victorian London, and more.
The film adaptation, unlike many other of its kind, has created an entirely new storyline, rather than simply copying the original source material. Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Apocalypse) is starring in the lead role as Callum Lynch during the modern-day, and then as Aguilar in 15th Century Spain. Marion Cotillard (Inception) also stars alongside Fassbender, although her role as not been fully revealed. The two actors are working with familiar face, Justin Kurzel, who they recently collaborated with last year on Macbeth.
The new image below, released by Total Film Magazine, shows Fassbender in some sort of cell, but so far there’s not been any real clarification of where he is or why. The present-day storyline is meant to be very important to the historical one, allowing for pivotal connections in both plot and and character. In due time, a trailer should surface and possibly even some more series details, especially since a sequel is already being planned.
Assassin’s Creed will be released on December 21, 2016.
