Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario) is easily one of the most underrated directors in Hollywood. His films continue wow audiences, despite them never going on to achieve big financial success. However, the Canadian filmmaker might just be able to change that with his new sci-fi drama, Arrival. It’s based on the short story by Ted Chiang called Story of Your Life (which was the film’s original title), and follows a team of experts who are tasked with being among the first humans to make contact with mysterious alien spacecrafts that land on Earth.
We were recently given a teaser trailer for Arrival, which showcased the gorgeously dark imagery, all-star cast that includes Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and smart science-fiction elements. And Paramount has just unveiled new trailer, giving us an ever greater look into Villeneuve’s spectacular film. Merely by the footage released so far, Arrival is quickly becoming one of the most exciting films of the year. Not only does it seem like the film will have a thrilling story to tell, there might also be a few relevant societal themes hidden underneath.
Arrival will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, then move on to the Toronto Film Festival before it opens in theaters. Hopefully, Villeneuve will gain a bigger fanbase with what he’s bringing to Arrival, and not one bit of it will be undeserved. It’s very possible that the film will also be in awards talk come this winter, so be sure to check this one out.
Arrival hits theaters on November 11, 2016.
