Netflix’s New Trailer For ‘Mary’ Offers A Fresh Perspective On The Story Of Jesus’ Mother

Netflix is set to release Mary, a new coming-of-age drama that reimagines the nativity story from the perspective of Mary of Nazareth.

Scheduled to premiere on December 6, Mary promises to delve into the early life of one of the Bible’s most iconic figures, portraying the struggles and strength of a young woman who was chosen for an extraordinary destiny. The trailer teases a blend of both reverence and grit.

The film stars Noa Cohen (Silent Game) as Mary, with Ido Tako portraying Joseph. Set against the historical backdrop of a politically charged and often hostile environment, the plot follows Mary, Joseph and their newborn as they flee from King Herod (played by Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins).

Herod, fearing the rise of a new “Messiah,” orders the death of all young male children, a decree that forces Mary and her family to seek refuge.

“Mary was a smart, strong-willed young woman facing monumental challenges: overcoming social stigma, evading a jealous king and bearing the weight of a world-changing destiny,” Director D.J. Caruso told Entertainment Weekly. “This film shines a light on that journey.”

Caruso, known for directing I Am Number Four and Disturbia, explained his vision for portraying Mary’s lesser-known struggles and resilience.

“By the film’s end, you will see that she has blossomed into the iconic Mary that so many adore,” he said.

Mary seeks to show the challenges of her journey, revealing a more human side of the young mother who became central to Christian faith.

The cast also includes Eamon Farren (The Dig) as Satan, bringing an ominous presence to Mary’s journey, Stephanie Nur (Lioness) as Salome and Susan Brown (Game of Thrones) as Anna the Prophetess.

With a focus on faith, courage and perseverance, Mary offers a fresh take on a story known worldwide.

Mary debuts on Netflix on December 6, just in time for the holiday season.
