Netflix has released the first official trailer for the psychological crime thriller The Whisper Man, which is scheduled to premiere globally on the streaming platform on August 28, 2026. Adapted from Alex North’s 2019 bestselling novel of the same name, the feature film centers on a dark family drama intertwined with a decades-old mystery.
The narrative follows widowed crime novelist Tom Kennedy, portrayed by Adam Scott, whose eight-year-old son is suddenly abducted. Desperate to find his son, Tom reluctantly reunites with his estranged father, Pete Willis (Robert De Niro), a retired police detective who spent his career investigating a notorious serial child abductor known to the public as “The Whisper Man”. As the investigation intensifies, the father and son discover chilling operational similarities between the current abduction and the crimes Willis thought he had solved decades earlier.
Directed by James Ashcroft (Coming Home in the Dark), the film features a screenplay adapted by Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It). The project is co-produced by Anthony and Joe Russo’s independent studio, AGBO, alongside producers Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting. This production marks the sixth feature-length collaboration between AGBO and Netflix, continuing an established creative partnership.
The ensemble cast features several prominent names, including Michelle Monaghan as Detective Amanda Beck, who oversees the active kidnapping case. The film also stars Michael Keaton, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, John Carroll Lynch, Acston Luca Porto, and Will Brill.
The Whisper Man represents Netflix’s latest push into high-profile literary thriller adaptations, aligning with the platform’s previous successes in adapting dense, suspenseful fiction. The film will be available to stream worldwide late next month.
