Netflix has revealed a host of upcoming South African content including part of Mandla Dube’s high-profile talent deal, Heart of the Hunter, and a romantic comedy called Soweto Love Story. Netflix made the reveal as part of the See What’s Next panel at Mip Africa today after the streaming giant has made several recent partnerships with filmmakers and other industry members from the nation.
The investments will enable us to uncover unique perspectives and diverse stories from South Africa to entertain our more than 238 million members around the world- Netflix Middle East and Africa content boss Ben Amadasun.
A three-film partnership with Dube was revealed last year, and Heart of the Hunter is being described as a “twisted spy thriller” based on the novel by Deon Miller. Netflix also has content deals with Mo Abudu and her Ebonylife Studios and Kunle Afolayan, a director.
Meanwhile, Netflix Africa’s YA Series Miseducation is due to drop on September 15, and YOH’s Christmas will be Netflix Africa’s first holiday show. Amadasun also revealed that new seasons of Blood & Water, Savage Beauty, and Young, Famous & African were coming, as well as further elaborating on the previously-announced Kandasamys: The Baby.
We are incredibly excited to continue with our investment in South African storytelling and to expand our relationships with these amazing storytellers- Amadasun.
